The PALIMPSEST project represented by Irene Bianchi from the Politecnico di Milano proudly participated in the official groundbreaking ceremony of the new Joint Research Centre (JRC) site in Seville, held on 30 June 2025. This landmark event marks a significant step forward for the New European Bauhaus (NEB) initiative, celebrating the launch of what will be the EU’s first net-positive emissions building.

Hosted by the European Commission, the event brought together architects, scientists, policymakers, and cultural actors committed to shaping more sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful spaces in Europe. The ceremony included interventions by high-level speakers and featured insights into the innovative design approach behind this emblematic structure.

JRC in Seville has grown to become the second-largest JRC site and the fourth-largest of the European Commission. The site is located on the Isla de la Cartuja and hosts a team of around 400 professionals, including economists, engineers, and computer and social scientists.

PALIMPSEST was honored to be present at this pivotal event, reinforcing its commitment to the NEB values and to co-creating regenerative practices that connect people, places, and ecological thinking. As a NEB project, PALIMPSEST shares a common mission: to integrate culture, heritage, and sustainability into the urban transformation of European territories.

We congratulate the JRC, the design team, and all contributors for their vision and leadership in setting a new benchmark for public architecture in Europe.
